The buttons on men’s and women’s shirts are on opposite sides—one of those small details you may never notice unless someone points it out. Men’s shirts usually have buttons on the right side, while women’s shirts usually have buttons on the left.
Since most people are right-handed, that seems odd, but when you consider the history of getting dressed, it starts to make sense.
The most common theory for why buttons are this way has to do with who was doing the buttoning. In earlier centuries, wealthy women wore some pretty complicated dresses—think “Bridgerton.” They always had someone to dress them, so they placed buttons to make that person’s job easier. Men’s clothing, on the other hand, was typically put on by the wearer himself.
Other theories point to military clothing. Historically, many men’s jackets and coats were designed with weapons and movement in mind. Since many men were right-handed, right-side buttons made it easier to reach into a coat with a dominant hand without the garment getting in the way.
One last theory is that women’s buttons are on the opposite side to men's because they rode sidesaddle. Women often sat with their right side facing forward. Putting buttons on the left prevented wind from rushing into the garment and blowing it open while riding.
The real question, though, is: if most of these theories are rooted in older times, why are they still followed today? The easiest answer is that most traditions stick around.
Once manufacturers started making men’s and women’s shirts this way, the design became a convention. Shoppers got used to it, brands kept producing it, and the difference remained.
It could be convenience or just convention. It’s not a rule anyone technically follows, but in traditional men’s and women’s button-downs, the old divide remains: men’s on the right, women’s on the left.
